Don’t miss out on this new blog post LOADED with ideas for teaching the Properties of Matter!! I am planning a series of posts covering each set of standards for both 4th and 5th grade (TEKS & NGSS). I am packing all my planning ideas and links to materials into these posts, so it may take me a while to make it through an entire year in both grades. But, I’m going to try really hard to get it all going in time for each week of he school year next year. You can follow my blog to get updates when a new post is ready. I will post something here each time, too. Take a look at it, and let me know if there’s something else you would like to see in these posts.
Instead of me always answering your questions I thought it would be more fun for me to ask YOU questions! I know that “mum shaming” is a real thing, but I find that if we prevent people from sharing their ideas, especially when it comes to raising and educating children, we are closing ourselves down to potential solutions for challenges that we face.
So here, give us your opinion. Tell us what worked for you. And what didn’t.
You never know if your ideas will inspire other mums and teachers. Be respectful. Another fun way to practice writing our letter R’s! This activity has been great to build a learning community with little ones. We help each other write and cheer each other on when we try our best.
I love teaching littles! I was originally nervous to make the jump from 5th to preschool, but I am in my third year and I absolutely LOVE it! Plus, it gives me the time I needed to keep working on all the curriculum teachers need and request 💗 Watch for my first post on Ideas for Teaching Science in 5th to come out on teachersworkstation.com this week! I worked long hours on my off days last week and it coming along great 👩🏼🔬. Working hard to finish up the first blog post in my year long series on Ideas for teaching science!! I am so excited to get this collection of resources out there and help teachers plan their amazing science lessons!!!
Each post in this series will cover a standard or set of standards (NGSS & TEKS) with all the ways I teach those standards. I’m hoping to get lots of visuals in each post and lots of good ideas to make planning easier. Plus, links to resources so you can just print and go! I will make a 5th grade post and a 4th grade post for each lesson unit. And, in the (maybe near) future I will make K-3 complete lesson sets and blog posts to accompany them!!
This will all take lots of time, but I will work my hardest to get all this made for you guys 💗. Print Art Lesson🎨 How to create prints and pattern using a simple shape! To begin cut out any shape, I chose a leaf. This shape is probably a bit complex for some children to cut out so a simple shape like a circle, ring or star would work fine too😊 Once each child had a shape cut they can experiment with ways on how to create patterns using the rubbing technique (crayon on its side with paper on top of the shape, just as you would to take a tree rubbing🌿).
I created a repeat pattern layering each rubbing on top of one another as well as a symmetrical pattern. There are so many opportunities and the children will more than likely think of so many ways to crate patterns. Such a simple but effective process art lesson! What a game changer for giving directions that require multiple steps! Even the best little listeners can forget which step you said comes next, so how helpful would it be (if only for your own sanity) to stick a simple visual like this on the board? These cards from Heather @theprimaryparty look so easy to manipulate, mix, & match with magnets on the back. Step 1️⃣: Go check out Heather’s page!
Step 2️⃣: Follow her for more amazing ideas like this one (and cute pictures in general- she’s adorable)! Working on updates to the Three Year Old Curriculum Bundle! I am making a letter animal for each letter with the option to make it a craft or coloring page. Younger three’s could definitely benefit from an adorable letter animal to color, while older three’s may be able to glue animal pieces to their letter. Having differentiation options is so important for any age group, but especially for the age ranges learning letters in preschool. 🌟 These would also be great for reviewing letters in kinder.
✨There are MANY more updates coming, too! So keep an eye out for new downloads- all updates are free to previous buyers.

📸@ecotykes . I know how challenging it can be to put together a school wide science fair! I put this guide together hoping to set you up for success!! My first year, I might have cried at how overwhelming it all was. But each year after was incredibly rewarding to see the students and classes work so hard doing science 😍😍 What an amazing way to spark an interest in learning and apply standards to real life! I have seen many teachers grabbing this step-by-step Science Fair Guide this week, so it must be that time again to get ready for it at many of your schools!
I have two options available for you: The Student Log Book (by itself), and the Complete Guide Kit for a teacher to organize a Science Fair at your school (which includes the log books). This was completely updated last year, so if you own it don’t forget to grab the new one free to all previous buyers!! On Valentines day Feb 14th 2019. Erica Thicket and the Eco Tykes were delighted to be invited to talk to Edge Hill University, Primary Science trainees. They are getting ready for teaching practise and the Eco Tykes adventures in “Fergs and the Eco Tykes” and “Give the Earth a Hug” gave them a reference and ideas for topics on Sustainability. Enjoy your teaching experiences and all the very best of wishes. The Eco Tykes look forward to hearing how things have progressed.
The Eco Tyke adventures can also be used as a platform for teaching different topics in several subjects. The Eco Tyke Motto states-“See all, hear all, speak out. Respect all, use all, save owt, and if tha does owt for nowt. Do it for people, animals plants and the environment.” 📸@ecotykes. A friend of the Eco Tykes was getting rid of an old woollen skirt. She heard about an Eco Tyke project using woollen garments for felting. The Eco Tykes had been to see The Aurora Borealis, Northern Lights.
Inspired by the colours of the skirt and the night sky and landscape on the trip. This craftily created Eco-sy is designed to keep the pot of tea/coffee warm. They call it “Skirting around the Aurora!” The skirt was boiled and this was what was left of the skirt! (size14 UK) The lining was still a size 14 after boiling! Great to use as the hillside around the base of the Eco-sy. The top of the cosy is the waist and the loop made as a hanger part of the waist band. 📸@ecotykes Crafted Eco-sy designed by Eco Tykes.
Taking a sneaky peak. Some Eco Tykes live not too far away from the Rhubarb Triangle in Yorkshire. Experiment growing their own! This way the rhubarb is forced and a great delicacy. Rhubarb originally from Asia loves the wet cold winters in Yorkshire. Yorkshire once produced 90% of the world's winter forced rhubarb from the forcing sheds. Between January and March people visit the sheds to see the rhubarb growing in the dark and harvested in candlelight!
In the darkness the stalks are smooth and crimson in colour rather than the green naturally grown stems. If you are quiet, in the sheds you can even hear the rhubarb grow. A gentle popping of the bulb or creaking of the stem.
Reduce the distances your food travels to your plate. Purchase from local source or grow your own.
